What Is IPAF?
IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) is an international not-for-profit federation that promotes the safe and effective use of powered access equipment. The IPAF training programme is delivered through approved training centres worldwide and represents the internationally accepted competence standard in the industry.
What Is the PAL Card and How Long Is It Valid?
The PAL Card (Powered Access Licence) is an international qualification issued to operators who successfully complete training and testing at an IPAF Approved Training Centre. It is recognised in more than 80 countries and is valid for five years. The card shows which machine categories the operator has been trained in, and can be renewed through a renewal course when it expires. For companies working on international projects, the PAL Card serves as universal proof of operator competence.
Which Machines Require IPAF Training?
The IPAF training programme covers mast climbing work platforms (MCWP — EN 1495) and construction hoists — passenger and goods hoists under EN 12159, goods hoists under EN 12158 and transport platforms under EN 16719. Alongside operator courses, the programme also includes installer training and managers training for those overseeing sites where these machines are used.
How Do You Become an MCWP Operator?
No prior experience is required; the process takes four steps. First, register with an IPAF Approved Training Centre. Then complete the theory module covering machine categories, risk assessment, daily checks and emergency procedures. The third step is practical training and a practical test on real machines. Participants who pass both the theory and practical tests are issued the PAL Card. Course duration is typically one to two days, depending on category and experience.
Where Is the Training Delivered?
The MAKSAN Lift IPAF training centre in Sincan, Ankara will officially operate as an IPAF Approved Training Centre as of November 2026. Training is delivered at our centre or, on request, at the customer's own premises and site — for all machines, regardless of brand.
